As the aerospace industry pushes to decrease the weight of its next generation aircraft, the use of titanium fasteners has increased. Titanium fasteners offer high strength and low weight. However, these same properties that make it an excellent material for fasteners also present problems when the fastener needs to be removed. When a fastener requires removal, a tool referred to as a “collar cutter” is used. A collar cutter is essentially a trepan tool used to machine away the nut of the fastener while leaving the bolt in tact so that it may be removed from the hole with minimal damage. Traditionally fasteners have been made of aluminum. Historically, collar cutters made of high speed steel were the tool of choice. As the use of titanium fasteners increases, a collar cutter manufactured of tungsten carbide is required.
