Collar Cutters
Precorp is committed to providing new and innovative cutting tool solutions to our customers. Our inspiration for innovative tooling stems from our customers needs. One recently discovered was the need for a “collar cutter” to remove fasteners from aircraft structure when a repair is required. As the aerospace industry pushes to decrease the weight of its next generation aircraft, the use of titanium fasteners has increased. Titanium fasteners offer high strength and low weight. However, these same properties that make it an excellent material for fasteners also present problems when the fastener needs to be removed. When a fastener requires removal, a tool referred to as a “collar cutter” is used. A collar cutter is essentially a trepan tool used to machine away the nut of the fastener while leaving the bolt in tact so that it may be removed from the hole with minimal damage. Traditionally fasteners have been made of aluminum. Historically, collar cutters made of high speed steel were the tool of choice. As the use of titanium fasteners increases, a collar cutter manufactured of tungsten carbide is required. Precorp is pleased to offer tungsten carbide collar cutters. These tools machine the titanium fastener nuts so that removal of the fastener is quick and easy. The collar cutter design may be designed specifically for your fastener requirement and drilling system requirement. A collar cutter is a necessary tool for any aircraft structure manufacturer.
