Micro Tools

Micro machining is a growing industry as technology pushes for smaller components. In addition more exotic materials are being used in micro machining. The medical and electronics industries look to precision, wear resistant tools to meet these demands.

Precorp vein technology allows for PCD micro tools that are impossible to manufacture using traditional PCD tool manufacturing methods. With capability to produce drills down to 0.015” (0.4 mm) Precorp veined PCD micro tools are a perfect solution for abrasive micro machining application.

Given that all of Precorp’s products are engineered cutting tool solutions, each micro tool is manufactured specific to your application with regard to geometry and material grade. A full variety of micro tools is possible from drills to reamers, boring bars, milling tools as well as special form tools. Precorp micro tools are used in a variety of applications, such as green carbide, ceramics, circuit boards, silicon and precious metals like platinum.

Precorp micro tools range from 3mm to 0.4mm.

THE POLYCRYSTALLINE DIAMOND (PCD) PROCESS

PRECORP’s PCD process is the method for making unique shaped diamond edges which enables the creation of innovative diamond tooling solutions for common and special problems.
STEP 1
A carbide blank is slotted and filled with diamond powder.
STEP 2
The carbide blank is inserted into one of Precorp’s high pressure, high temperature presses and subjected to 2,700º F and 876,000 psi. In this process the diamond powder is compressed and the diamond crystals are bonded to each other and to the carbide blank.
STEP 3
The PCD nib is then brazed to a solid carbide shank. The braze is located sufficiently away from the tip of the tool to avoid any potential thermal damage. This allows the use of a high temperature high strength braze joint between the nib and the carbide shank.
STEP 4
The drill geometry is ground to produce the finished PCD tool. This patented process allows for many tool geometries that are impractical and/or impossible using conventional PCD insert processes
